Interview With A.J. Syngrafèas

Today, my dear friend AJ tells us about what’s been going on in her writing journey!

Hey there AJ, thanks for doing this!

Hello! Thank you for having me! So glad to be here!

Tell us a little about yourself!

I’m a young fiction writer who writes for the glory of God. I mainly write fantasy, but I also love writing dystopian, sci-fi, and contemporary (though usually all have a fantasy twist XP). When I’m not writing, you can usually find me scribbling in a notebook, reading, or sketching. I love coffee, tea, chocolate, sharp pencils, music, early mornings, and all things fast and possibly dangerous. XD

Tell us about your writing journey and your current projects!

I began writing seriously in 2020, since then I’ve completed many many short stories and two full length novels (not including the novel-length fanfiction LOL). Currently I’m editing the second draft of one of my projects, When Wings Break.

About:
Nobody can enter or leave, but all she wants is freedom beyond the city’s walls.

R Atara has spent her whole life dreaming of leaving Regnum City. She’s sick of having to hide her bright hair to avoid attention all while sucking up to the government and struggling to survive. Not to mention Elias’s odd behaviour lately. So when she finds out she has wings and is subsequently left with no option but to leave the city, it seems like all her dreams have come true. That is…until she finds out that the freedom she seeks comes with a cost.

He’s just a criminal struggling to keep his little sister safe.

Thieves are nothing more than dirt. Criminals are always caught. Liars are traitors. That’s all that repeats in Elias Atara’s mind day after day. After all, he’s all three. For the past few months, he’s been hiding everything from R, just trying to keep the promise he made to his parents before they died. But when the lies he’s told are finally uncovered and his mistakes cause everything he’s worked toward to fall apart, how can he possibly keep R safe?

They’re both walking along a path that just seems to lead both of them further apart and shatter their worlds at the same time. They’ve got no option but to keep moving forward or else they risk being caught and executed. The truth feels far away and darkness seems to creep closer with each moment, will they be able to find hope in the darkness and learn to truly love each other again?

Who inspired you most to become an author?

A lot of people did, but mainly two of my best friends. They started writing stories and sharing them with me. I, not being one to be left out, started my first book and I haven’t stopped writing since!

Tell us a bit about your blog and its mission!

A Mountain Girl’s Meandering is ultimately a place to lose yourself in fiction. From writing advice to piles of short stories, there’s something for any fiction-loving person. The blog’s mission is to share hope and light filled stories with the world and just be an escape from the real world.

Do you have any advice for other young writers? Mistakes that you’ve made that others can avoid?

My number one tip would be consistency. Without consistency, I probably would have never finished any of my projects. So, even if you don’t have time to write a whole bunch, just open up your project and add a sentence every day. It will pay off big time throughout your writing journey.

My second tip would be to believe in yourself. No matter how hard writing seems or how many times you feel like your writing is terrible or that you are too young, remind yourself that you are doing great. Sure, your project may be a mess, but you are a better writer than you think. With a few edits, I can tell you that it will be amazing. You are a wonderful young writer. You got this.

What are some resources you recommend to young writers?
